Consider if we found what we were looking for on the first attempt of looking. It would be correct to say that it was the first place you looked for it and also the last place you looked for it (unless you are dumb enough to continue looking after having found it!).
My point is that the phrase is incorrect because it will always be the last place that you look for something that you find it.

I think you can read that phrase two different ways. One is a kind of joke because you found it the last place you looked...of course! Like you said, you don't keep looking after you found it. The other is more like saying you found something in the last place you THOUGHT to look. Let's say you lost your keys...and you looked in your pocket, on your dresser, behind the sofa cushions, in the ignition, etc. but suddenly you decide to check the fridge (just because you're desperate) and there they were. That would have been the last place you thought to look!

I would say that that phrase would always be correct, assuming you found what you were looking for, it is always in the last place you look.

because usually you look, and look for something and get frustrated. You list places in your mind where something could be for example your keys - might be in your purse, kitchen counter, or coffee table. So you look in your purse, than on the counter, then there they are on the coffee table! - So that is when the phrase applies "They just had to be in the last place i looked!" basically - go figure!...

Sometimes, it's literal...like if you are looking for something and you've looked everywhere, but in one place adn you look there...like it was the LAST place you looked meaning there were no other places to look. You've looked in the last possible place. If you had looked there first, you wouldn't have wasted all that time looking elsewhere.

I think it's because we just don't realize the meaning of what we're saying.

Well, not so much "incorrect" as "trivially true".
