It's surely "Escape from New York" . Directed by John Carpenter. With Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine and Donald Pleasence ( playing the president!)

Escape from New York... Kurt Russell wearing an eye patch, which is rumoured to have changed sides during the film, but I never spotted it! Maybe you will..... just don't both with the remake...

Actually there are two films where this happens:
Escape from New York (1970's film - starring Kurt Russell)
and er....
Escape from New York (1990's remake - starring err... Kurt Russell)
The original is a classic, and the re-make is dire.
