Blimey Teach - ask a decent question and look at the rubbish thrown!!

I actually did a briefing paper for work on religions - and in fact the concept of atheism varies. I looked around t'internet for something that explained it well, and the good old BBC provides a really good explanation.

Good reading!

I assume you mean the monotheistic, Christian god. (You know, there used to be places where people never heard of that faith. Like animist tribes in South Africa)

The best definition of atheism I could find is; "Critique and denial of metaphysical beliefs in God or divine beings" So denial of any God or devine being means that already a God or devine being had to be defined beforehand.

But you are asking a question and emposing a viewpoint at the same time; you say that God exists and atheists only exist by this so-called fact. Your question, essentialy, is limited by the strictness of it's worldview. Since the existence of God can never be proven, the answer to your question can never be given.
In religion proof is determined by the confirmation of those who follow it.

Not really. Atheist do not believe in God. They may or may not believe in any spiritual being. An atheist may worship the cosmic muffin, but not god. So does that mean there is a cosmic Muffin to worship? No, just because one person believes one thong, does not cancel the other out.

I'd never thought about it like that before :-)

I'd have to say yes because I can't see how you would have one without the other.

As such, does that mean that if the world was Athiest to begin with, would Religion be created?

No, only the idea of a God. I don't believe in monkeys with 6 heads and wheels instead of legs, but that doesn't mean they must exist because of my disbelief.

No, A atheist is someone who does not beleive in the concept of a God. It's a little like: I beleive you have a Car - does my belief actually result in you having/not-having a car?

I don't believe in dragons, so naturally dragons must exist for me to disbelieve in.

You don't believe in Vishnu, so Vishnu must exist for you to disbelieve in.
