Passwords are antiquated by now.
The computing world is moving toward pass-phrases.
Pass-phrases are simple sentences such as,
"my shoe has red potatoes".
The advantages of passphrases are that they are simple to remember, but much more difficult to crack. There are hacking utilities out there which can make short work of passwords under 15 characters long.
Of course, not all places where you would use passwords allow for pass-phrases, as either they do not allow more than 14 characters, or don't allow spaces. These folks are behind the times and need to catch up.
To further enhance the security of a pass-phrase, you can use other types of alpha characters. For example, on my example pass-phrase above, I could incorporate a capital letter, a number and a '!' mark.
"My shoe has r3d potatoes!".
That pass-phrase would be next to impossible to crack with cracking utilities, is reasonably easy to remember, and is the direction of the future.
If the system for which you are choosing a password does not allow for such a pass-phrase, try to incorporate as many characters as possible, and as many non-lower case characters as possible.

I use a data encrypting program which gives me a 10-space password consisting of upper case / lower case / numbers / usable symbols generated at random.
Looking at some of the other answers no wonder so many accounts and computers are hacked in to. All the hacker has to do is make a few guesses and there in.
(If you have a LAME password you deserve to get hacked in to!)
(YEA! I trust some unknown website to store ALL my passwords! LMFAO)

For personal systems, any password is fine.
Systems which are shared, e.g. office systems, passwords that are 12-characters long & includes alphabets, symbols/puncuations & numbers will be more appropriate.
E.g. Password@123 OR
Yahoo!456789 OR
123456789.Com OR
Test$123Password.
Do not use password that includes your name, Email address or dates of your anniversary.
Do not use the same passwords on different accounts more than once.
It is best to change your password once every week.
Hope this answers you queries.

Well I also think of passwords just watching any different thing on my desk.
But a good choice is to put a simple asterisk( ' * ') some where between ur password. just like pass*word.
or pen*cil, p*en*cil or pe*n*cil,... etc...
This actually makes diffucult to guess.
& also diffucult to hack as the paswords are actually the value calculated by multiplying the binary of ur characters.
I do that & I had one of my password with a very very comon word or a name for like 7 years.
I just did not needed to change my pasword ever.!!
U also try it..

My pass words are probably easy to guess if you thought really hard, but on the other hand, they are obscure and you'd have to know how my brain makes connections out of nothing.

What I can associate things with. For example, a very important date such as an anniversary or something like that.
