If you are wondering about earthworms, they are actually a good thing to have in your soil. They indicate a healthy soil, which will grow good plants. If you find them "icky", just wear a good pair of gardening gloves, and have a pad to kneel on, like a thick piece of cardboard or something.
If you are worried about parasitical worms (such as pinworm), again, the gloves and padding will help. You should also be very careful to wash your hands and etc. after gardening, and especially before eating!
What you don't ingest, can't hurt you.
Happy Gardening!

Actually, worms are the gardener's friend.
As they move through the earth under your plants, trees and shrubs, they "aerate" the soil allowing for saturation of oxygen which promotes better, healthier, growth.
Some gardeners actually add worms to their soil for this purpose.
In addition, the worm poop, actually called "castings" or what is known as "vericomposting", adds nutrients to the soil and is an excellent soil conditioner.
Ever heard of a "worm farm"?

Just wear gloves, they are a lot more afraid of you than you are of them.

They are gross, but harmless. No need for protection, unless you are going to get intimate. ;)
