Many old cast iron stoves were lined with firebrick so that they would both retain and provide even heat. I'm guessing that, if you have the right kind of stove, you could line it with soapstone.

The refurbishment of both "vintage stoves" and "antique stoves" is a fairly active business. If you do a Yahoo search for either one (include the quotation marks), you will turn up hundreds of websites that will give you guidance. Some sites will identify your stove and offer an opinion as to value if you send them some digital photos. I am sure that you will enjoy exploring the sites.
