It's what drives cars. the combustion (fire) is on the inside of the driving cylinder (internal) whereas, in a steam engine, the fire is outside the drive cylinder.

Any engine where the combustion of fuel is internal to the engine. Contrast this with old timer steam engines and later gas turbines of power houses where the fuel (coal etc) are burnt outside and steam / hot gas drives the engine.

An external combustion is where the power used to move the piston is produced outside the engine, ie a steam engine, the water is heated, turned to steam & then directed to the cylinder to act on the piston.
