All Africans are not Black. North Africans are of distinctly non-black stock and the !kung (formerly called Bushmen) are of non-black stock as well...in fact they belong to their own ethnic group, though they share a few limited morphological traits in common with Asians. Like Europe, or Asia, Africa is a continent and not a country and so different native ethnic groups merge and co-mingle there.
As for why Africans (in general, even the pale skinned ones) have dark (or at least darker) skin, this is due primarily to a combination of environmental factors and gene pool concentrations. Because quite a few African countries stradle the equator, they receive great amounts of sunlight and dark skin and wiry hair in the human population act as both natural sunblock and a way to radiate excess heat. All humans have these qualities to one degree or another, but the concentration of such features as dark skin has more to do with an adaptation to the specific environments that exist in central, western, and eastern Africa.
Because vast portions of Africa are either hot and dry or hot and moist, the human populations native to those areas have adapted over the generations to deal with those environmental factors...most obviously in the production of melanin in the skin (melanin is the same stuff that makes eyes and hair brown, or parts of monarch butterfly wings jet black,) and the propensity for melanin-endowed skin to retain moisture.

Okay, nobody here has answered this question correctly yet and everybody just guesses and there are no facts or proof or anything to back up what they say.
The Bible is a very reliable source for educating oneself...
Cain, the first murderer in the Old Testament, son of Adam and Eve, killed Abel, his brother because of jelousy and hate and a pact with satan he had made.
He was cursed by God and sent from his family and his skin was cursed to put a "mark" on him and his people as the first murderer and follower of satan so that others wouldn't mix with his seed, lest their children be cursed with "the mark". They were not blessed with promises from God and weren't allowed to have the Power of God to act in his name.
Now, even though there are still "blacks", we can obviously see that there are MANY different shades, so, we can assume that it's "going away" somewhat. "black" people are just as good as any one else and equal to everyone else in every respect, despite where they came from.
I came from Vikings who were the most horrible pirates of the seas. Rapers, murderers, robber, you name it, we were the worst. But just cuz I come from that doesn't mean I'm like that, ya know?
Just makes things more interesting is all. Otherwise we're all the same.
(by the way, I have "black" family, and they believe the same way I do).

All of the indigenous peoples of Africa fit comfortably within our modern definitions of the word "black." North Africa is home to many non-black and extremely mixed people as the result of centuries and centuries of colonization, conquest and massive migrations of immigrants. The somatic norm in North Africa doesn't start to move away from classically "*****" features until about the 7th century AD. It is during the rise of the Islamic Empire, that the population of North Africa becomes very very mixed with massive numbers of Middle Eastern Arabs coming over in droves. So the Arab type you see in contemporary North Africa, is not indicative of the natural diversity that exists among the indigenous people's of Africa.
Human beings, in their original state, are black skinned. Science has long since proven the effects that certain climates have on the human body. It is very easy to determine, for example, that the climate of the norther nile valley, would produce people with black skin, very curly hair and other such distinguishing features. But people are not limited only to their place of origin. Look at the United States. The modern peoples of the United States, do not at all resemble the peoples who used to inhabit the country for thousands of years prior to theit extermination. Such is the case with North Africa. There was a time when one could go to Scandanavia, Judea or Colchis on the Black Sea, and see whole towns and cities filled with black people. There was a time when one could come to the Americas and see a whole race of people whom we can scarcely locate now.
It is very important to remember that the way things are now, is not the way they have always been. So yes, all of the indigenous people of Africa are black, and for purely climatic reasons.

Like most everyone else said, they're not. There's lots of Arabs, Caucasians, and Indians (from India) that live in Africa.
One thing that doesn't seem to be considered though is the concept of recessive and dominant genes. The genes "white" people have to make them "white" are recessive while "black" genes are dominant. What that means is when people with differring skin colors have interbreed, the darker skin tones will be the ones to be more predominate. That's why despite all the immigration of lighter skinned people into Africa over the centuries, darker skin tones have dominated
