It's the rotation of the earth - if you are wondering how a 747 travels against the rotation of the earth - it's because the atmosphere rotates along with the earth. Which means that the earth is stationary to a 747.

Even without knowing the exact velocity of either I know the earth rotates faster by virtue of the fact it would take a 747 a lot longer than 24 hours to fly around the globe.

Actually, if the 747 is at the equator, and traveling in an easterly direction, then it is technically traveling faster than the rotation of the earth. You really need a frame of reference.

The earth is faster towards the centre that is on the equator a lot faster than a 747. but also at the poles the speed is almost zero they hardly move. so as a basic answer the earth is faster
