his performance was exeptionally good with the ball however his all round game needs to drastically improve his fielding is atrotious and his batting isnt up to much... i dont want to take anythig away from him but he was bowling on a very bouncy pitch so the conditions were in his favour if he repeats these exploits on lesser pitches then he takes giles place in my opinion. good question.......oooooooooooohhhh monty mony monty monty monty monty panesar! barmy army barmy army barmy army

Monty seems a bright prospect for the future of English cricket in the spin-bowling category. Some consider him the top spinner in England, even ahead of Ashley Giles; however, all signs are that he will have to work very hard to maintain his position in the side upon Giles' return to fitness, as Giles is able to bat at number 8, and also is a competent fielder, whereas Panesar tends to lengthen the tail and potentially cost matches due to dropped catches. He will accordingly have to perform better as a bowler than would be expected to of better balanced cricketers to keep his place.

Panesar showed he had ability to take test wickets in his very first test match in Nagpur India, where he took the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. He was quite economical in his debut test series, and took a respectable number of wickets. In the 2006 Test Series against Sri Lanka, he claimed his first five wicket haul for 78 runs, in the third test at Trent Bridge.

Monty is not a batsman, but can survive a good ball and can be considered a fighter. He could potentially turn out to be a difficult obstacle in the England tail, as he showed against Muttiah Muralitharan's onslaught at Trent Bridge in 2006 who was on 8-48 aiming for a career best. Monty got 26 off 28 balls by sweeping the ball and hit an impressive 6 against Muralitharan establishing himself as a crowd hero of that England innings. He eventually fell to Sanath Jayasuriya with LBW.

Monty's often erratic fielding is the subject of much discussion, being by far the weakest area of his game. Some observers, including England coach Duncan Fletcher, have even gone so far as to suggest that this could keep him out of the side in future if it does not improve. Commentators have claimed he has received ironic cheering from sections of the English crowd. This is on the whole not the case with many fans cheering a player they see to be a new cult hero reminiscent of Phil Tufnell.

Monty took 3 wickets in the first innings of the Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford, Manchester, on the 27th of July 2006. His wicket-taking was overshadowed by a raging Steve Harmison who took a 6 wicket haul to get Pakistan all out for 119 in the 1st innings. However, Panesar took 5-72 in the second innings, and Harmison 5-57. The pair took 19 of the 20 Pakistani wickets in the match (the other being a run out), the first time two bowlers had taken all bowling wickets since Jim Laker's record take of 19 for 90, in a convincing innings and 120 run victory, in which Monty took the wickets of five of the six specialist batsmen in the team in the second innings. During the match the home fans shouted his name from the stands for what was his best test match to date.

Well, if you mean as a person then I don't know. On screen he looks sweet and innocent though. He gets the loudest of cheers from crowd on his fielding, batting or, would say, all his actions on the field.

As a cricketer, he hasn't achieved enough to be labelled as great. He has a bright future and looks like getting a permanent place in the squad ahead of Giles. He has a tough test ahead - the Ashes, if he can get England a series victory then, ofcourse, he will cover great miles in becoming a great bawler.

Although, there are few drawbacks which he needs to work on - fielding and fitness (he always looks fragile), he is my man for the England's future prospects.

WTG!

He is defenilty proving himself match after match. If he can develop his fielding skills then he could be a pure asset for a team.
