I bought some really beautiful fabric in India. Please don't suggest getting a tailor to make them for me - my hobby is sewing and I am looking forward to making them myself, I just need patterns and/or detailed instructions! Thanks!!

If you can find a good tunic top pattern that fits across the shoulders well and has the fit in the hips that you like (I'd assume not too close for this type of project), then you can make it into a kameez. I think getting the upper body to fit well will help you from looking like you are swimming in it.
An elastic waist pants pattern can easily have bands added to the bottom to make them look authentic.

You can find patterns to sew your own salwar kameez at Lashkaraa. It is the premium online store where you find an exclusive collection of ethnic Indian couture.
