Think of two boxes; one is labeled "adaption to environment" and the other is labeled "choice". When we're young, we're constantly picking personality traits from these two boxes and creating the unique people we're becoming.

So, one person in a family "adapts to having divorced parents- or environment" by becoming an extrovert (outgoing, funny, etc) and "chooses" to become the captain of the basketball team. The other person in the family "adapts to divorced parents-environment" by becoming an introvert (shy, serious, etc) and "chooses" to become a song writer for a local band.

Are they different? Yes. Can we support their "adaption" and "choice"? Yes. Can we appreciate them? I say YES!

Only if they are having difficulties "adapting" and "choosing" should we be called on to assist them. Otherwise, whatever they're becoming is probably something we need within our "human system". Think of it as new "software" designed uniquely for our times.

Michael Jordan and Bob Dylan could be viewed as being "designed" just for us. Cool!!

Cheers

Why are you different from your siblings/cousins/parents? You are biologically different. It's the nature/nurture argument I guess. Sometimes your genetic makeup dictates your personality.

There is also an aspect of Darwinism. There is always a fight for survival, a fight to be the leader, in nature. If one of your rats is stronger than the other, it will overpower the other repeatedly, reaching the food first and getting first pick etc. As such, the other will learn that the first is the leader, and he is the subordinate, and his behaviour will reflect this. He will be the more passive, whilst the other will display more dominant traits. In this way we adapt to our environment and its demands on us.

So even though the two rats were raised together in seemingly the same conditions, they have both experienced different things as one has asserted itself as leader, and the other must accept this.

Why can two brothers look totally different?

For the same reason, their DNA has made different connections in the dominant genes.
