"A foolish man will walk down a path and fall into a hole only to fall in again the next day. A smart man will walk down a path, fall into a hole and never fall in again. A wise man pays attention to the world around him. He sees the foolish man and the smart man fall into the hole and avoids it all together. "

I asked this because many people I have spoken to are divided about the wisdom in this quote. About half agree full heartedly, the other half believe we should only learn from personal experience. Strange, isn’t it?

Isn’t watching someone experience something an experience in itself? Do we need to fall to know what it means to fall? Or, does our empathy take care of this for us.

Yeh but hardly anyone ever learns from watching anymore....then again, there aren't a whole lot of wise people either.

I don't think you can truly learn something without experiencing it, therefore the wise man would not be as experienced as the smart man. Obviously, if we are only talking about falling into a hole, of course he who is wise and saw two other men fall would not follow their path.
Which makes you ponder, if our leaders were wise, would we again try repeating history, or are they only smart and want to try the rule out for themselves?
So, yes, I agree with that saying very much, and it applies to everything in life, because to become wise you must first be a foolish man, then you must learn from your mistakes to become smart, and with much experience you could one day be wise. All in due time, of course!

A foolish man cares not for his safety.
A smart man cares for himself and is blinded by the plight of the foolish.
A wise man cares his well being by seeing the plight othe foolish and the smart. Thereby avoiding the pitfall that traps us all.

Yes, I usually learn from my mistakes, and when I see other people make mistakes, I also learn how not to make them.
