well your wrong! it is infact fact. but it was`nt a stone, it was abrick. in 1823 a builder in warrickshire john putup was repairing his house when a brick came loose and fell into the garden, where unluckily two birds were nibbling some bits and pieces his wench had thrown out, when buff they were killed instantly, and from then on the words killing two birds with one brick. but ofcouse that did`nt rymme so the poets changed it to stone. there you go, hope your happy with this answer....andymuzic

Sure they did man. The phrase is kind of a sick revisiting of the case of Triloughby Cockrobin and his chief of staff and herald Twittery McWingflap. On 12th March 1963, the two birds were sitting on a branch of a birch tree in Swanage, England, when Steve McCarthy, an unemployed bricklayer of dubious moral fibre and uncertain parentage, hurled a single stone at Twittery, uttering the cry "Shurrrup ya noisy perisher!" as he did so. The stone hit Twittery in the heart and he quite literally fell off the perch. However, the ricochet from the stone hitting Twittery's body was caught and accentuated by his chest feathers, and as he began to fall, it spun the stone, like a pellet from a sligshot, and the stone went straight through Cockrobin's throat, exiting through the back of his head. Some observers have always questioned whether the "magic pebble", as it's become known, would have been capable of killing both birds, and cite an unconfirmed 'second thrower" behind a nearby grassy knoll. But in the absence of evidence to the contrary, the case has been closed and remains the only reported case of a single stone killing two birds...

I really think this an Urban Legend but I'm sure if you lined up 2 birds on a fence and throw quite a large stone at them that you probably will hit them.....Please dont try this as i would be pretty upset if i thought my answer lead to 2 innocent birds being killed!
