If you live in small quarters and are going to be away most of the day, choose a tortoise. This animal requires only a little bit of water and will eat fruits and veggies so you don't need refrigeration for its' food .

This is a pet that is easiest to care for, and the price of fruits and veggees are good, especially since these animales will gladly take your leftover raw veggies and lettuce etc. Don't feed spicy or sauces, just lots fresh

Don't listen to anyone's answer unless you thoroughly reseach the care of each pet. A lot of adults don't even know how to take good care of animals, so your first mission is to read as much as possible about the animals you like. Make a list of pets that you have seen at friends' houses, on TV, on the internet, etc. Make the list as long as possible, then look each one up on at least 3 good websites. Look at the housing, diet, and training requirments, and find out how much attention and care they need every day. Then look at how long they usually live. Can you guarantee that you will spend that amount of time EVERY day with the pet for as long as it lives? Do you have enough money to get all the supplies for the rest of it's life? What if something happens where you can no longer keep the pet. Is it an easy pet to find a new home for? For example, if you get a rat or mouse...they make great pets, but if you need to get rid of them, you can't just give them to a pet store or they will be fed to snakes. I hope this helps, this is what I do when I want to get a new pet.

Here is a list of pets that I consider easy for young owners over 8:

*Rodents (gerbils, mice, rats, hamsters)
*Fish (betta, guppies, mollies, tetras)
*Reptiles and similar pets (hermit crabs, newts, salamanders, tree frogs, green anoles, leopard geckos, corn snakes, ball pythons)
*Birds (parakeets, finches)

Pets NOT appropriate for young owners (need to be cared for by parents):

*dogs and cats (too much training and vet bills)
*iguanas, turtles, tarantulas, scorpions, water dragons, true chamelions, other delicate or dangerous reptiles
*Saltwater fish, goldfish (need big tank, needs lots of cleaning)
*Rabbits/guinea pigs (awesome pets, but need lots of daily care and excersize) Have parents check out: http://rabbits.org
*Ferrets (same as rabbits)
*Cockatiels and bigger birds: need lots of training and bite HARD!)
*anything too exotic or expensive (hedgehogs, sugar gliders, etc) Too much care and not many know how to take good care of them. Your parents would be pretty upset if you killed a really expensive pet on accident!

Hope this helps! Make sure your parents love the pet you choose so they can enjoy it too, and help with the care and vet bills!

It will depend on the surroundings being suitable for your chosen pet and your ability to care for it
