It's lucky to cut it OFF the rabbit. It's a trophy. It symbolises the defeat of the rabbit which replaced the hare as a symbol of the old religion. The hare was the symbol of the goddess Oester, the moon goddess, who gave her name to oestregen, the female fertility hormone and to Easter. Taking her name was a triumph for the early Christian missionaries. Then it became accepted that witches travelled the country disguised as hares, which became unlucky symbols of evil. Then the Easter bunny was co-opted into the new religion. Taking their feet is a symbol of victory over bad-luck and ill-omen.

It was very lucky for the rabbit. After all, it helped him run away from predators. It helped him to dig it's warren, it helped it dig for food, it helped it hold it's food while eating.
I'd say it was quite lucky for the Rabbit :)
