"IP" stands for "Internet Protocol". Also known as "IP address", which is the numeric identification for your computer network or any device (such as a modem, server, cable connection) attached to an IP network. Every client, server and network device must have a unique IP address for each network connection to work. It's somewhat similar to the telephone network, where you have a "unique" phone number to allow others to call you. For more information, you can visit http://computing-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/IP%20address but I'm sure other "tech" websites can give you additional information as you need it.
"IP" also stands for "Intellectual Property" for legally copyrightable materials.

IP stands for Internet Protocol. Internet Protocols are basically set of rules which every computer needed to follow in order to communicate with each other over the Internet.
To identify each computer (or network) uniquely on the net and send information/data between them each computer is given an address- called the IP address. This way we know which IP address is the source of the data and which IP address is destination.
The current version of IP is IPv4 which is most widely been used. But Internet is slowly being made ready to support the next version- IPv6 as there is limitation of IP address in IPv4 which is almost near exhaustion.
