You must live in California, I was in the Air force there and that is the only place I've been where these tiny pests bite humans, "No See Ums " as they were called were seasonal and only appeared in the heat of summer. The ground would get long, deep, cracks in it and these terrors would swarm out of them to attack their unsuspecting victims, I secretly think they come from hell, and are not a true development of nature. Another theory is they were being developed by the army to cause terror in our enemies. Then by accident and they were released on us. Still another theory was it was a sinister plan by mosquito's to penetrate our best defenses, Window Screens. LOL Wish I could help.

Why do you think everything has to have a purpose? What's the purpose of human beings, for example?

If you define "purpose" as "what something does", then the purpose of gnats is to bite people and to serve as food for whatever eats gnats. And by that logic, the purpose of humans must be to kill other humans, make other species extinct and to trash the planet. Gnats do none of those things, so their purpose must be superior to ours:-)

So perhaps it's best not to believe that everything has a purpose unless you can be sure your own species has a good one!

All gnats do is make more gnats to annoy you.
