No do not open it more interesting if it was to remain a SECRET....this is my theory....
TJ was a solider who mysteriously vanished in the war he was young, intelligent, handsome in a rugged sort of way and in love with violet who he had married and moved into what is now your home...together they talked about marriage and before he went to war they married in the local registry office.
As the days got nearer to him leaving he thought about putting together a memory box for violet should anything happen.
The year went bye and he was killed violet knew about the box but was heart broken and she never went to dig it up.
Now you have found it.
Other scenario is was buried by TJ Muggle as a time capsule and holds only a rotten piece of rubbish!

Well, I would start by simply washing it under water in a "deep sink," or your garden hose in the yard, to remove the dirt. Try and get the extranous matter all removed so as to allow you to open the box, or at least see inside to where the "treasure" is located.
Remember, though, that the actual treasure might be the box itself, so don't go to extremes and damage the box trying to find what is inside, because there might not be anything inside of value except some rust from the box itself.
Then take photos of it, from a few angles, and sell it on eBay or whatever. There is a buyer for everything!

Sorry, I don't believe you found anything.
First of all, why do you care about damaging the box itself if it's all rusted anyway? You would be too anxious to get to whatever is inside...could be gold, or gold coins.
Nice story but, you could have been a bit more imaginative.

Pop the lock, if its' old it will just slide open with a bit of pressure from a knife: another thing to try is to just oil the lock up; it may free it up; the box will probably be worth more than the contents!

. . . keep quiet about it for the time being - relay the patio over Heather; let things settle down - and then think about your box (it's probably just an old Roman tissue box, the initials stand for Treasure Jest) . . .

Grease it, oil it, and keep it out of the daylight for few days then try to open it by the suggested methods. But No you won't wait so prise it open now and put us all out our misery by telling us what's inside.
Ha ha I should have guessed it was one of your great wind ups by the clue planting 'Heather' (white of course).
Whatever here's to success with growing your lucky white heather. It grows better in acidic soil by the way!

Give it a good soaking with WD40 or GT85.
Give the lock a good squirt to get all of the mud out.
You may then be able to use a bent paperclip or nail to pick the lock. If you can't pick it, then you will have to break the lock.

Nice story, I think the first thing anyone who found a box burried in their garden would have done is pried it open.
