i mean columbus didn't go around forcing everyone to think the world was round, he provedit. so how about all you gaylor.ds shut up until they find the gay gene.

until then we have 2 viable theories:

a) you are born that way
b) it's a choice

and im not INTOLERANT for believing the latter until you prove me wrong, since you bear the burden of proof.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND.

Yes, keep an open mind. Here's another one: follow your own advice. Prove to me it' s a choice and I will believe you. But I will never, ever follow anyone blindly.

Why do straight people try to pass off as fact that being straight is inborn even though it hasnt been proven?

Typically, to prove that something considered a "rule" or "fact" is wrong, you just have to give one example that doesn't work. I've heard the argument "it's not a choice, it's how you are born" and maybe it is for some of them. For those that say that statement is true for all gays I just have two words: Anne Heche.

Was she born straight, decide to be gay and then realize she was straight or was she "born gay", finally realize it and then decide to be straight? According to the "it's not a choice..." argument, it can't be either since both possible answers have her "deciding" to be either gay or straight.

I'm sure that during the period of time that she "was gay", all of those ""born that way" people would have been saying her sexuality wasn't a "choice". She is a perfect proof of how, at least in one high profile example, a person's sexuality is, or was, a choice. Can someone now prove that some of them are actually "born that way"?

(I find it hilarious how some people just say "you're wrong about..." without any explanation or example of how the person is wrong.)

(I guess someone doesn't think other people's opinions are... "Bearable")

One "argument" against the idea of it being a choice that I have always found ludicrous is the "when did you choose to be straight" response. Until the early 1980s homosexuality was considered a sexual perversion/mental illness. I wonder how long its going to be before a pedophile claims that he was born that way and tries to use the argument "when did you choose not to be a pedophile".

There is no definative single proof that being gay is completely inborn. There is a lot of proof that there are biological differences between gay and straight people from birth on.

There is no proof that being gay is a choice. There is a lot of proof that it is not a choice.

So are you asking us to keep an open mind about a theory that has been disproven (choice) while ignoring a theory that might be true (being born that way)?

The choice thing is crap. It has been completely discredited. It's not intolorance to point out that fact. We can quibble about if it is really inborn or not, but it is disingenious to present choice as being anything remotely resembling a viable theory.

And as a sidenote, your Columbus example is completely historically inaccurate. Columbus never believed the earth was round. He went to his grave thinking the earth was flat.

Well, as you know, there are lots of people out there that just don't like gay people. I'm not one of them though.
Because of this extreme dislike some people and scientists attempt to give another anwer to why people are gay. For some odd reason they just can't accept the fact that you can choose to be gay, and so they try everything they can to try and come up with any other anwer they can. Maybe they think this because some people show signs of being gay from an earlier age than others. That's not much proof though and that'r why they're trying to support their theory.
As for me, i don't really know if there is a gay gene, but i do know that it's definitely a choice.
Besides that, we live in a society where homosexuality is heavily frowned upon, a so when gay people who grow up in this knid of atmosphere find out they're gay they may automatically assume its a bad thing and may believe it when people say there's a gay gene.
I believe that it can be both.
have a nice day.

Actually those aren't the only two theories. You could not chose to be gay and not be born that way. That comes with the idea that homosexuality is developed from environment.

And most people claim to know things without absolute knowledge. People still don't know, with absolute knowledge, that the world is round. There is the belief that everything in existence is only a person's imagination. So there is no world, no people, etc.

See, I don't think it's necessarily born. I agree with you completely, but I think it's rather arbitrary placing the burden of proof on only one side. My personal theory is that its based on a biopsychosocial model, much like pretty much anything else about our personality / identity etc. However, I have zero evidence for that, and don't try to convince anyone else of it. I'd point out that you have no proof it's a choice, so that that's YOUR burden, and you would be intolerant to force other people to believe that, or to make legal policy based on what is your personal (VERY) uneducated theory. Incidentally, they knew the world was round. Hate to burst the kindergarten bubble.

Teel me, what could change in your mind if gay-sexuality will be proved by burden of proof then?!
It’s to say, what could change for any straight people knowing that?
Do you think that if it is a choice-like as simple as you guess, then there will be more blame?
Sorry, you have understood nothing about sexuality.
Besides your point of view starts assuming that prejudices and intolerance come thro the lack of “burden of proof” mainly!
Anyway, it’s not so simply!
Lastly, I believe gay people mustn’t bear you or to the others “straight people” any “burden of proof” because sexuality is a normal stuff that ought to be accepted independently from its tendency!

Of course, it has NOT been proved that it is NOT inborn, either.

All you have proven with your question is that you cannot keep an open mind. And that you are, of course, intolerant.

FYI many people before Columbus proved the world was round. He was trying to find a shortcut to India.

While keeping an open mind here...

there are animals who practice homosexual habits. so... are you trying to say these animals are into the whole gay-pop culture too? I'm sure they didn't do it to impress anyone. Hell, if it's anyone who's totaly in-tuned with their 'natural instincts', gotta be the animals, right? just because their a minority group, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. dwarf ppl exist, are u trying to say it was their choice to cut off on those few inches? there r ppl who like cheese, and those that don't. Just becoz more ppl like cheese doesn't make the haters nonexistant/lying.

We can't ALL be the same. Some just happen to be a lil different.

One more time for all the ignorant question askers: You keep an open mind and answer this: Which one would you choose? A lifestyle accepted by society, your family, friends and co-workers as the norm OR one that is under CONSTANT scrutiny, unaccepted by the majority, still a point of controversy, that allows people to point at you, laugh at you and mimic you to the point of humiliation. Again, your choice...
