No matter whether you use a iPod with a Mac OS or a Windows OS, If you want to sync songs and listen to it through the iPod then it has to be transferred from iTunes s/w which will be provided with the iPod.

Alternatively you can store the MP3 files as data files on the iPod by enabling disk mode. Enabling disk mode can be done by holding down the menu and the play/pause button. once you hold these buttons together you'll see Disk mode blinking on top of u r iPod screen. Now when you connect u r iPod to the computer the iPod will act as a external HD on which u can store any files / folders. Assume that u store some MP3 files when it is in this more. You may not be able to play them coz it is locked in disk mode. To bring the iPod back to the player mode you need to hold down the Menu and the select button(the center button) together until u see a apple logo on the iPod screen. once it is back to the player mode you still cannot play the files which u stored as data files.

Hence only if the songs are synchronised with iTunes you can listen to it on the iPod not by anyother means. I'm not sure whether any third party s/w is available other than iTunes which will let you do that.

Hope this helps!!!

Good Luck
