The trend to get a tan was first introduced by Coco Channel during 30's. Before that getting a tan was out of the question especially for women simply because the good and rich society was distinguished from the white and pale skin colour and in contrast to poor people who had dark skin because they had to work in fields where they were exposed to the sun.
This is the reason why during the old times women used to wear white gloves and carry white umbrellas with them especially during summer in order to avoid getting their skin dark

I'm not sure...but I've noticed that in the past year, the desire to be tan and "glowing" is really really high. However..seeing as I rarely ever follow these trends..I will stick with my dark brown hair and practically glow in the dark freckled skin. I'd rather look natural than fake bake or use a spray on tan. Its just not my style!

Good question.

Back in the day it was hot to be pasty white. This is because the rich determine fastion, and back then, only rich people could stay indoors out of the sun all the time.

These days, it costs money and time to tan. A tan says, I take lots of vacations on expensive resorts so to speak. Hence, tans are in.

In art men were seen as tan and women as pale. I guess when the female revolution started women found tan to be attractive. Other than that caribbean appeal it gives and the way it excentuates lighter clothing, its just pretty to look at.
