Aha! Media trap, there, buddy.
Not all Americans are wealthy or unkind. Take a look at Hurricane Katrina. It uncovered the impoverished in America that seem to have no voice.
It is a myth about "the streets paved with gold". Most Americans strive to simply to work and take care of their families, like any other person.
During the 2003 blackout, someone in Turkey said, "Let them wait in the dark for power like we do." Finally a friend explained that power blackouts occur all the time in that region, but they have more backup generators since it occurs far more frequently, and at least have emergency power for some time.
They are still are out and about to go to market and other places and live their lives normally with some inconvenience. They just didn't simply comprehend the effect of such a blackout in North America.
So, really, the remark made was not really that malicious. It just seemed that way, thanks to the media spin.
Americans are bewildered when their media tells them of their good efforts with the Tsunami and Pakistan Earthquake relief efforts, then find that there is still an anti-American sentiment.
The potential terrorist remark? That's just plain old stupid. Anyone, American or not, with a heart should know that!
It is absurd to suggest that Americans advocate the murder of sleeping children. It is absurd to suggest ANYONE would advocate the murder of sleeping children.
More than ever, it should be clear that war is not the answer.
Peace and tolerance. Love and temperance.

It's probably how the education system and media in the States made the way the Americans are today. I have been to the States before and have been amazed by some of them. They seem to know nothing much about the world outside USA. It's not only the Americans who can be ignorant about world affairs; some of the other nationalities tend to be like that too. As long as the issue does not affect their interests, not many countries would want to interfere in it or elaborate on it much in the media. They may sound rude but I suppose when you are exposed to the kind of media back home, you tend to think highly of your own nation and disregard the others. This happens worldwide.

I used to live in America and until I moved I did not realise just how anal the country is. The dollar is shrinking in worth because they don't travel abroad as other countries do, they see only the side of the news as presented by the country and not the devastation it causes others, and they say arrogant things when its not really called for.
Your statement that that one person made though? I can't help feeling that s/he is still thinking strongly of 9/11. That struck so deeply in the hearts and souls of Americans that I think it will take decades for the population to recover.
I know after watching it unfold just on the telly live that day while talking with my mom on the phone I will forever have my views changed on certain peoples.
I rather doubt that Kim II-Jong knows what the word pansy means if he called Americans that. Don't you know America kicks butt?
I am not American by birth, but it really irkes me when people make blanket statements who have not lived there, formed realistic opinions of the whole country and still think that they can spew their sentiments about it.
It's like family, I can say what I want about them, but you should keep out of it.

Arrogant maybe, Ignorant? Not likely when more people are trying to get into our country and our univeristies than anywhere else in the world. Our economy is stronger than anyone else's in the world. We have more freedom than most of the world. As for calling Americans Pansies, when was the last time anyone actually wiped America in a fight. North Korea tried and got their buts whipped. Iran fought Iraq for seven years and didn't get anywhere. It took America two months. Russia fought the Taliban and was sent home. America took how long? Conceited, probably at times. I will admit that. You want us to be sensitive to others lives when you obviously fail to mention that Isalmic militants have been killing civilians for years. Both ours and their own if they disagree with their version of Islam. Sunnis hate Shiites. Be glad America doesn't feel about Arabs as Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran feel about Jews. THEY have repeatedly stated publicly that they want to annilate the jews and their nation from the face of the earth!. If America ever takes that stance about the Arab race of people or the Middle East you would be extinct

The truth is that the opinions of most Americans do not matter even in their own nation so naturally they are a bit frustrated and angry, and only place they get heard is here, so they would try to be rude or bullish just to prove their point, OR the ‘power’ of their point.
So let them make their point, take example from Pyongyang and Tehran and don’t get bullied, that’s all, a single man speaking the truth is more powerful and an entire nation following a lie, take the example from Mahatma Gandhi here.
There are some problems here, with respect and self discipline as in any meeting of the world would imagine, many people are already misusing their privileges here, so report abuse when it gets too much.
Above all, why do you give anyone else’s opinion so much importance that they rattle you or your self beliefs?

I think your opinion matters, and hope to hear it more!!
Please don't let some of the fruitcakes on this site be your American ambassador...there are just mean-spirited people, that don't have anything more constructive to say, than something hateful. I am an American, and I try to reach out to others like you to question why Americans are hated around the world?
Unfortunately, like most prejudices...it's simply some are judged wholly by the actions of some people in their "group", like race or ethnicity. Or by the policies of the American gov't.
It's terrible the atrocities that are occurring all over the world, but we have to put aside hatred, and come together to make a better future! - And I can't agree w/ Kim Jong Il, any leader that lives in a palace while his citizens starve to death needs to worry about his own country and not name-calling.

I think that aubry65355 has answered this question perfectly by stating that Americans are not pansies because they have not been beaten in a fight. You left Viet Nam and the Bay of Pigs with your tails between your legs, and fell on your faces over the Teheran hostage affair. In the fights in which you have been on the winning side you have never been alone but have always had other countries with you. In your war of Independance the French aided you, and you made sure that you came in on the winning side in two World wars etc, etc. Perhaps if you acknowledged these facts the World would not think you so conceited and Americans (in general) would not be so disliked

Now, now.
Not all Americans are hate-mongers. Your opinion is just as important as anyone else's and the people that respond like that are either TRYING to cause trouble, or they are, as you say "arrogant, ignorant and self-conceited." I personally, am getting tired of all the generalizations. And I don't just mean for Americans. I'm tired of hearing people say "all Americans are ignorant". Or "all Mexicans are lazy". Or "all Muslims are terrorists". Or whatever. But I do want to say, Kim Jong Il is a crazy little man who needs a good, firm hand.

What a sniveling little faggoty assed pansy.
America's the best!!!!
I think it's so cool that everyone has there knickers in a knot over us. We love the attention!! Good or bad.
You people are the hypocrites. See no evil hear no evil speak only evil. While Slovadan Milosevic was comitting genocied on your doorstep you ignored it. You claim to be sooo righteous but you're just weak, snivelling, whiney, hypocritical cowards. You constantly put America down (fine by me) but the minute some big bad bulley comes along you scream, "What's America going to do and how come they're not doing anything." You people are pathetic.
And oh BTW, I am over here so I see all your pathetic BS firsthand.

Well since our policy's are destroying other country's, and reeking havoc on the rest of the world, I would say your opinion matters. The pathetic Bush supporters are the ones that are getting vulgar with you, they think that idiot is perfect and can do no wrong. But not all Americans feel that way, I'm an American and I hate Bush. As far as I'm concerned our government owes the whole world an apology.
