cat LITTER goes into a LITTER tray or LITTER box, where a LITTER of kittens go to use the bathroom. Is that clear enough for you? Jeez!

very good question. Here's another:

The word "fast" can be used to mean "moving quickly", or "staying in the same place".

OR

Dust can mean to sprinkle with fine particles or to remove fine particles.

Fix can mean to restore something to a working order, and can also mean to castrate, or make it not work anymore.

Left can mean "to remain" or "to depart"

Don't you just love words?

I think the answer can be found in the definition of litter.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/litter writes:

lit·ter
n.
1. a. A disorderly accumulation of objects; a pile.
b. Carelessly discarded refuse, such as wastepaper: the litter in the streets after a parade.
2. The offspring produced at one birth by a multiparous mammal.

The litter of babies fits definition 1a and might be why it's also the 2 definition. The litter of babies is a (disorderly) accumulation of objects. And the place cats go to the bathroom in is a litter box because it fits definition 1b. Their excrement is discarded refuse.

By the way, almost everyone I know (I'm from MA, USA) calls it a litter box and not a litter tray.
