Speaking hypethedically, lets say there are two serial killers or rapists, both are convicted, but one is sentenced to death, in a high-security prision, where they couldn't be harmed, and the other is sentenced to a medium-security prision where other inmates are "free" to beat, rape, and torment an inmate. Which of the two is justice, an eye for an eye, or a dose of their own medicine? Are there worse things than death?

Depends on your perspective. I'm personally against the death sentence because I think that too many people are wrongly convicted. The judicial system should be based on "innocent until proven guilty", but the death sentence is totally against that. There should always be a chance left for someone to either appeal a bogus sentence, or truly redeem themselves and start a new chapter. However, if you're posing a philosophical question and we assume that the people in question are guilty with no hope of being released or redeemed, I guess I would say death is better than ultimate torment. At least for them.
Eye for an eye? Dose of their own medicine? The "medium security" place would be more fitting, but those aren't good standards of justice. Tormenting someone for something they've done is no good for society, either; being in prison is already keeping them off the streets, the only thing tormenting does is drive them further along the path of unhappiness and mental and social demention. They were obviously there in the first place to have committed these crimes, but "eye for an eye" only makes it worse. Again, I think that death - in this hypothetical, philosophical, abstract case - would be better for both them and everyone else. But these arguments IN NO WAY support the death sentence.
On a more general note, a lot of people would choose death over enslavement, humiliation, things of that nature. That is, in my opinion, bravery. True living is living to have no regrets when the Reaper comes for you - and come he shall.

Think about it...death. It is the end of life as you know it. If you believe in an afterlife, things start to get really interesting after death. Now think about life in a coma for years, or on a respirator, or as a quadriplegic due to an accident, or with burns over most of your body, or any of a number of accidents or illnesses that can befall a human. I think there are many things worse than death.

As for inmates...if another prisoner wants to "teach someone a lesson," there is probably a way.

For the crimes like Rape, law should be strict like an eye for an eye.
But apart from crimes and criminals, worse thing than death is marriage!

Good question, in my opinion the only actual worse things than death is what people make them out to be, aka suicide.

on the original question, YES, apparentally the most feared thing[more than death] is speaking in public, but the rest of the question has too many variables, appeals, tax payers money, morals....

Yes, there are things worse than death. To answer your question though, that's what's wrong with the death penalty...it's disporportionately applied.
