why would he know if you dont. there are several different parts that do the same purpose on several different model, year. vehicles that have different options he was just going off of what he had to work with. i am not saying that autozone does not have problems looking up parts because they do but on something like that you are better off buying both and bringing the wrong one back. i work at a dealer where they input the vin in and thats the best way to look up parts and i get the wrong parts all the time. unfortunatley they do not have the capabilities to input the vin in most cases.

No he should not know this. It's all in the computer. You should be able to tell him if it's the shallow or deep pan. Just stick your head under the truck and look.
This stuff happens all the time. Manufacturers have small changes or mutiple configurations. When I run into this situation, I buy both parts and return the one that is not correct. Don't blame the Autozone guy. He's just a working stiff that knows a little about a lot of vehicles. You should know your own car inside and out and own the shop manual for it.

I worked in auto parts for some time, and I know what you are talking about. Quite a few countermen are afraid to say, "I don;t know, let me find out", and the customer ends up getting bad info. No one person can know all things about all cars.
HOWEVER, in the case of your trans filter, Ford did install a deeper pan on some models as opposed to others, and the only way to know is to look under the truck. There is no way for the person at the counter to know which one you had, short of crawling under your truck, so don't be sore at him for it. In those cases, I usually asked the customer over the phone to bring in the old filter, or if they were already there, to just pick up both and bring back the one they didn't need back. Usually, customers were very understanding (and in most cases, seeing that I was making the extra effort to help them understand the situation brought me many repeat customers).

first of all what gives you the right to question this poor guys ability to do his job. From what it sounds like to me is he should be given a raise for having to put up with jack *** such as yourself. He tried to help you with your truck, for that you should thank him.
To answer your question, stop being a cheap prick and go to the local ford dealership and buy the filter and you will get the correct one. or if that is to complicated for you then have someone else with a whole brain (unlike you) take care of the service for you

I think assumption and presumption is our greatest crime. THe guy is no mechanic to know every fine details or parts in your car. As it is your vehicle , you shouls be able to tell him specifically what U require. If U are not able to, then its best U send it to a mechanic and avoid all this unnecessary blaming.

Garbage in, garbage out.
How can anyone expect to get accurate results without accurate input? It is YOUR vehicle, not his.
