This is like asking: How long is a piece of string???
Ring or go online to an airline, get an idea of flight costs from your country.
Work out how long you want to go, where you want to stay. www.yha.com.au will give you an idea of cheap accommodation.
Your daily cost really depends on yur lifestyle: Hilton or Hostel, simple food or gourmet, beer or champagne!!!!

Of course it depends where you are coming from, as usually your airfare will be the biggest cost. Figure on (return) $1000-$1200 from the US, 800Euro from Europe, 800-1000 GBP from UK, maybe $300 from New Zealand and about $900 from SE Asia (ROUGH GUIDES ONLY-check the web for deals). As the others have said, it depends where you stay, where you eat etc. Because of distances, it is usually just as cheap to fly WITHIN Australia as travel by bus/train. Check out http://www.qantas.com.au and http://www.virginblue.com.au for fares. http://www.accor.com.au has a great range of hotels from cheap Formule One (about $60)to the luxury Sofitel (from $200 to $2000) hotel brands. A trip from Cairns out to the Great Barrier reef should be around $120, including lunch and snorkel equipment. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I think about $250. Average day trip to sights about $80-$120.
Come on over and have a great time!!!

From where?...Australia isnt a very expense holiday but if you want luxuries well of course it would be a little bit more expense. It is a great place and youll love it. You need to figure out where you want to go and what you want to do. You need to see a few parts not just one. If it is a first trip, save extra because you will want to sight see.

first and foremost get a nationwaide building society account and save all your travel money with them - why? becuase they are the ONLY financial institution that gives the 'mid-rate' when you spend overseas rather than the AMEX rate. In english, if you withdraw - say $100 from an ATM in Aus, the amex rate could be $2.35 to the £, Nationwaide rate would be $2.44 to the £. Avoid travellers cheques at all cost, far too expensive.

It depends on what you like to do, where are you flying from, how much do you drink (alcohol), & time of year. maybe consider a cruise from AUS to NZ, they can include fun & food!
