the tree you wish to transplant is named cotinus coggygria and is a relatively easy tree to transplant when done correctly, the absolute best time is to dig it as early in the spring as you can before it starts to leaf out...you can dig it in the fall but you must wait until it is fully dormant and that means that even though you can transplant it the tree does not get any chance to root in or get established so its more inclined to fall to the rigors of winters harsh conditions ..... those fuzzy balls are the remains of its flowers and are pretty cool to look at---hence its name "smoke bush" --there are numerous cultivars of cotinus coggygria ---a very popular one in the trade is "royal purple" which has darker leaves that are more purple than green and the blooms are shades of pink instead of the normal green to brown -----good luck, i say wait until spring if you can, and the best rule to use is for every inch of diameter of the main trunk you should dig 12" of diameter on the rootball..Example' if its trunk is 4.5" diameter you should have a 54" rootball--you don't need to dig any deeper than about 18 inches down though, as they are shallow rooted .good luck , blanco

the best time to transplant is in the fall.the reason is the tree is dormant and has the whole winter to re-root and feel at home in its new spot.when transplanting prepare the new area with manure peatmoss and compost.dig up an area around the bush and try to keep all the soil around the roots intact.when replanting, plant at the sme depth as before.water well and fertilize in the spring.good luck and happy gardening

The best time is mid to late September because the tree is not trying to nourish the leaves at this time and will be able to concentrate on nourishing the roots. If you move a tree before this time it most likely die.

I don't know how accurate this is, but my grandfather says you can transplant a tree in any month that has an "r" in it.
