An outdated notion that makes us feel like we are not alone in this sometimes harsh world and which makes us feel like we have control over our fate (through prayer or favor in God, whatever). People like to think there is order in the world - that good deeds get punished, that the Just are rewarded, that there is more to life than existance, procreation and death.
Of course, one only need read the newspaper to realize that this is not true: the teenager that kidnapped and raped for hours before being brutally murdered, the pious family man who only does good for those around him who contracts cancer, widowing his wife and orphaning his children (and have to pick up the pieces after he's gone). Liers and cheaters get ahead in this world. If there is a God, he's asleep at the wheel. "But they'll get what's coming to them in the afterlife".....yeah right (insert cynical smile here).
In ancient times we needed the concept of God to explain forces of Nature and cast out "demons" in afflicted people (they just had normal diseases). Raised in very Catholic family (CCD, Catholic high school, the works), the nail in the coffin of my faith was when I took a class on Mesopotamian religion. You can see the traces from nature worship, to developed polytheism, the beginnings of monotheism (with the concept of "personal god"), directly to the roots of Judaism, and from there to Catholicism. With the tipping of the hand it's like I'd finally seen the puppet strings dangling down through the ages. That was the end for me.

if there is such a source of energy from which all things come, it is not a "who", for it is not a person, nor any form of living being. and it is certainly not a "god" because that energy assumes no power over us or any other being, and it has no idea that we exist because it is not a conscious thing. it would make absolutely no sense for "god" to be a human being, it would be as nonsensical as saying "god" is a giraffe. whatever it is, it's something that we'll never really understand, because we are simply too inferior to comprehend it. maybe someday we will, but i doubt humankind will survive that long.

No one can tell you who is God.
You have to find who is God.
When home work problems are asked by boys and girls in Yahoo answer, I read the reply that do your home work yourself and we won't help.
Same thing to your question. Find your self.
Till then be trying.
If I show you somethng and say that this is God will you believe it?
So try yourself to find God.
One thing, I have not yet seen God. I am nearig 70.

I know Buddha never claimed to be God, but your question reminds me of this story I read years ago. If someone is able to help me to rediscover the full story, it will be very much appreciated.
A Buddhist monk and his novice have a conversation about Buddha.
The novice asks:
Master is the stone statue outside actually Buddha?
The Master answers:
No its just a statue.
The novice:
But what is Buddha then?
The Master:
The stone statue outside.
