This sounds like a known bug in Firefox. Unfortunately, the workaround is a major pain in the butt, because Firefox doesn't provide an easy GUI way to get at the settings you need to tweak for this). Here's the Firefox bug report for this:

Your control button might be stuck. That happened to me, everytime I hit the "w" while typing online the whole window closed down. I lost an entire email!!

Try hitting shift, ctrl, and alt repeatedly. But not simultaneously. Do that for a couple seconds and then try using apostrophe again..
