I'm sorry, but your baby is *not* ready for cereal until he is 6 months old. Unless he has a specific health problem (then the cereal falls into the category of medicine), he should *not* be getting anything other than breastfeeding (or formula). Every health organization worldwide (including the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Health Canada) says no solids or even water until 6 months old. Giving cereal at this age increases your baby's risk of allergies, asthma, and other health problems *throughout* his life.

My pediatrician recommended rice cereal, and she said both brands are OK to use. We went with Gerber mainly because it's been around for ages and we didn't have a problem finding it. Beechnut could be found, but we had to travel all over the place before we did. I've noticed that Beechnut is slightly cheaper than Gerber.

Any brand rice cereal, (I always used Gerber's) and really thin for starters. Sometimes you can find bottles or nipples with bigger holes so they can just drink it when mixed with mothers milk or formula. As your baby gets older thicken it up and work their way to a spoon. At 4 months they won't get much in them if they try to eat from a spoon.

I used Gerber and Earths Best. I started my boy at four months. Not because I was eager to get him on solids, I breast fed and he wanted to eat food. He was sitting up and would try to grab forks from our hands and food from us. Let your baby be the guide. He is sixteen months old now, very healthy, of normal weight and has only had a couple of minor colds and no ear infections.

4 months old is ready for cereal???? Did your pediatrician give you permission to go ahead? If not, wait until your baby is six months. So many parents are so eager to start food way too soon. The earlier you start food the more likely your baby is to develop type 1 diabetes.
