I'm guessing that you're talking about their careers, right, and it's extremely close:

Maddux (age 40) - 327-200, 3.06
Johnson (almost 43) - 274-145, 3.19
*************************************************************************
How do you choose the better of these two vastly different 1st ballot HOF-ers? My inclination was to pick Maddux, as he's been the more consistent pitcher. I'm also more of an NL guy, and also like Maddux's cerebral approach to pitching, and it's just hard to warm up to RJ as a person.

But, you have to consider RJ's better W-L percentage, and his higher K's per inning. The ERAs are really a wash as RJ pitched more seasons in the AL.

I could make a case for either, but in the end would probably (and it hurts) take the more dominant Johnson.

...I found it ludicrous that someone wrote that "he" bet that Johnson will retire much earlier in his career than Maddux. He's almost 43 and still pitching (albeit past his prime); does he expect Maddux (who's also past his prime) to pitch till age 60?)

It is very hard to say.. Both pitchers are obviously future Hall of Famers. Maddux with over 300 wins and Johnson with high number of strikeouts. It is hard to compare such different styles.. First off, maddux a righty and johnson a lefty. Already a completely different style. I would give the advantage to maddux to start because there a far more righty hitters in baseball. But with johnsons blazing fast ball and effective second and third offspeed pitch he can over-power any hitter. Maddux will certain not overpower anyone. As you know maddux is a crafty veteran whos not going to walk people, but will give up more hits than Johnson. So as you can see, you cant really compare these two players... if you ask me, i wouldnt want to face either. I wouldnt be intimadated my maddux, but i certainly wouldnt have much luck with his extremely potent movement. Also as a side note, my guess is that Johnson will hang it up a lot earlier in his career than maddux.. throwing that much heat does wear out the arm.

They're both having bad years, but overall I'd go with Maddux. Think about his years with Atlanta and all their division titles. Without him as the center of that rotation, they don't win half that many of them. Johnson has had good years, but Maddux has had a great career.

No, Maddux.

I would have to say Maddux is the better looking pitcher, but not by much.

I would go with Greg Maddux because he is far more consistent from season to season. He also fields his position better.
