On Monday i go to court to be sentenced. And the minimal sentence is 1 year in state prison and the max is 15 years. My lawyer says i will probley not get more then 5. Other then this time I have never been arested or been to jail. I have been on house arested since i plead guilty so i do not know what to expect. What will prison be like. Please give me any tips or a idea of what it will be like. I really want to go into this kind of knowing what to expect. I am told in the state jail you spend about 20-23 hours in your cell and the cells are 8x10. I do know i will go to Maylands Supermax. What will my new life be like.

Hey Steve,
Sorry your goin for a row... but well at least you are resigned to facing your sentence and you are smart enough to be asking questions.

I've only ever been in a Juvie and that was here in Australia.

keep your eyes up and walk with confidence...

don't set out to make freinds.

if you have a cell mate follow their lead a little, but dont be submissive.

just take things in your stride and get used to bein happy with your own company...

if you are offered any kind of educational course take it on.. it will give you something to think about..and worry about other than just being inside.

This is a question you needed to ask yourself before you got into trouble with the law! You will be approached by various gangs and solicited to join and like the previous responder said, even though they may have said it in jest, don't bend over to pick up the soap. Have you ever heard the term don't get boxed in? You don't won't to get boxed in. That's where several guys will first offer you protection and if you don't pay up then they'll catch you in a dark corner somewhere any you pay, usually with your anal orifice. You asked so I'm telling you and being honest about it! If you take commissary from some one thinking they're your friend think again, you don't have any friends. If you take it then you owe it. You either become the victim or the predator because that's all there is in prison. As far as recreation it depends on whether you go to State Jail or to Prison, but both have recreation yards where you are allowed so much time a day to recreate. You're naive and you have a tough row to hoe! You've decided to learn about life the hard way. They'll be looking for you as soon as you step off that chain bus. I spent nineteen years working for the Department of Criminal Justice and the best advice I can give you or anyone like you is sleep with one eye always opened. You have two sides of the coin you will either become a convict and become institutionalized or you will become a snitch and their lives don't seem so short, either one is not a pretty picture, but then you didn't ask for a pretty picture did you? You will be told when to get out of bed, when to go eat, when to go shower, when to go for medical attention, when to go to work, when to go to school, when to go recreate. It's a world within a world and life as you know it has changed for you. It will never be the same! Let me guess though, your a tough guy right?

Wow, Dude, sorry to hear that... to clarify for the folks assuming that he must have done something seriously heinous to go to a Supermax... Not really, prisons are classified by the highest security yard at the facility, most Supermax facilities also have lower security housing units.... as for the question, here's some info I had to get for my baby brother from a few friends who are in max. sec. prisons in CA... the advice hold across state lines, and I sent you a link via Yahoo IM.
If you do not already have good sneakers, get some, all white, no red, blue or green trim, those are gang colours and will not be acceptable, also make sure there is no metal in the construction of the shoes...steel toes, arch support, springs, etc.I’m sure you are not this dumb, but since three out of three brought it up, DO NOT get any tattoos... Hep C and Staph are pretty rampant, besides that ink is a pretty serious policy violation... just don’t.

Don’t seek out buddies, keep kinda low and let others come to you, and then be slow to befriend them...better to have a rep for being stand offish than for being indiscriminate. Keeping to yourself for the most part is a safe bet.
Do not borrow anything more than the occasional stamp from anyone and do not lend anything more significant than stamps or paper... this does not apply to swapping books or to pooling resources with your cellie, but keep exchanges even.... it’s the only way, without incident, to avoid being labeled a punk or a patsy, and those are hard tags to shake.
There's more, but it applies specifically to CA prisons... If you are limited in how much you can spend at the canteen, by shampoo, but not bar soap... shampoo can wash your body just fine but bar soap sucks for washing your hair, save the money for a little more coffee or a few extra soups.
You know how to reach me, if I can answer anything else, I'll try.

WOW what did you do? Sorry to ask, but Super Max is extreme for a first time offender. They usually only put you there when you can't be in general population due to fighting, etc.

Super max is going to be lonely. I don't know if it's every state, but only family can visit you. No bf's or gf's. They have to be blood related unless you are married.

You will spend most of the time in your cell, and only leave for showers, recreation, etc. I am sorry you have to go through this. try to stay out of trouble so you don't get more time.

Edit: If you are in Super Max then you won't be seeing anyone to drop the soap, or having to deal with sexual advances unless they are from your cell mate. In Super Max you are usually just with one person which is your cell mate.

Honestly, lawyers don't know and can't predict because one you have surpassed the minimum sentence, it is up to the parole board for the state. The lawyer has nothing to do with it at that point.

You will find quite a bit of information on www.prisontalk.com. It's a support site for those who have loved ones inside, but there are profiles and info on most all facilities in the US and I'm sure you can talk to folks who have loved ones inside and can give you info and their experiences.

GOOD LUCK.

My kid's uncle is in a Max security and its a lot better then county. You get more freedom, but if you mess it up it can suck, for instance, I wasn't able to see him(kid's uncle) for 2 years cuz he got busted with tobacco twice. Also my advice would be to find some the most "powerful" people in there and start making friends real quick

Do not believe anything you have seen on tv, or heard about. My son had to go to , for two years. he learned to cook. got some schooling, did some thinking for himself. He saw movies. just think, most of the guys are just guys like yourself, Good Luck to you. Martha Stewart made the most of it, so you can too

If you are under 30 and halfway decent looking, you should be prepared to service other guys. You didn't say what state you are in.

Prison is a place you go to to get punished for your crime, so I can't imagine it will be a pleasurable experince. You did the crime do the time and learn from it. ps good luck
