Who killed George (the ACLU lawyer) in the "Easy Rider" BOOK?

Yahoo doesn't have a book section, or at least, I couldn't find it. So I am asking about the book to the movie. There are basically two possibilities:
1) He was killed by rednecks.
2) He was killed by Hippies in a drug-induced rage.

It was the rednecks base my answer on where they were at the time and the times in which the story was written
