Someone dear to me is visiting friends in Korea. The border seems tense. Is there really danger? I am worrying just a little. Maybe more than a little.

Yay! Daughter arrived home today! Had a wonderful time! She only heard about the gunfire event from her pal's mom in the Midwest. Didn't even make the news in ROK. Whew! Now I can tell my wife.

Will NK overrun the DMZ and US and Korean troops? Somewhere between fat and chance. South Korea has convenience stores, cuttlefish pizza, movies, and traffic jams of all Hyundais. N Korea has carts with wooden wheels pulled by water buffalo, plays written by Kim Jong Il, and rice from Albania. They would love to cross the border -- so they could defect.

This is the first time since last October. It happens from time to time, and there are occasional confrontations at sea. These incidents usually don't get much attention in the media, but NK has been in the news lately so that's probably why it's news this time. It's possible it was an accidental discharge, or a drunken soldier and it doesn't really mean much of anything Then again, who knows?

Sporadic small arms fire is pretty normal. Also, the NK's like to sneak out at night and move the land mines around. Lately there's more tension but AFAIK overt activity at the DMZ is pretty much normal. Personally I wouldn't go there in the first place, but that's me. If Iran does anything funky on the 22nd it might be time to leave.

North korea is making noise as it has for years. They know that if they invade the South that the USA will toast them. It is North Korea's political posturing. It has been happening for years. It is because Bush can't work his foreign policy, and North Korea is sabre rattling, taking advantage of the situation.

I'm concerned about our troops over there. We have about 30,000 no match for the north Korean troops. If they come accrossed the line it will be horrible.
