"The arm of the condemned is swabbed with alcohol before the needle is inserted. Along with its antiseptic use, the alcohol also causes the blood vessels to rise to the skin's surface, making it easier to insert the needle. [1] The needles and equipment used are also sterilized. One reason for this is because the needles are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacturing. Also, there is a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the needles have been inserted as happened in the case of James Autry in October 1983 (he was executed eventually on 14 March 1984). Finally, it would also be a hazard for those handling unsterile equipment."

The whole lethal injection/death penalty thing HAS to be given ALL "humane" appearances, albeit the sentence has to be carried out.( and can with my blessing )...and this inculdes the pointless effort at sterilizing the needle used.

This is to basically keep the media hype from brainless anti-death penalty groups and screaming rights liberals from hawking TV press time with some silly arguement. Keep them quiet with their soft songs and burning candles....for what good THAT does.

Because sometimes there is a last second reprieve, and you don't want the guy suing the prison system forgiving him an infection, do you. Besides, most needles are sterilized in the factory that makes them and the prison just uses an IV from their regular supplies.

At that point, the wheel of justice has come to an stop. It would begin to roll again if the guys (rich) lawyer found the "un-sterilized needle" loophole after he was dead. The injector just wants to avoid personal liablility, and feel like he did his personal best. I'm sure he double checks.

So they know for sure that the person died of the injection itself, and not from something else that was in/on the needle.

IF FOR SOME REASON THE INJECTION HAS TO BE CANCELLED, THEN THE PERSON WOULD BE INSURED FROM NOT GETTING INFECTION FROM THE NEEDLE.
ALSO, THE PERSON GIVING THE INJECTION....IF SOMETHING HAPPENS AND HE GETS STUCK WITH THE NEEDLE, IT COULD CAUSE MUCH HARM OR DEATH TO HIM.

So the person dont die of other things apart from the lethal dose.

If the person dies of other things apart from the lethal dose; like an infection or alergy, he or his faimly can sue the state for wrongful death or say that the infection causes pain thus wrongful...etc etc...bla bla bla...american's dream of $$

Just save time and money and put one bullet in his head, and then we won't need to worry about the needle at all.
