We need to know oil pressure and alternator function, but not what direction we're traveling? Seems like a common sense thing to put on a dashboard.

I'm good with directions and maps. I can follow signs--but just because you're on the north-bound side, you may actually be heading east. I know all about GPS and Magellan. It's dangerous to look at a map while you're driving. I have a 97 Caravan with air conditioning being my big "extra feature" that I splurged on. I'm really asking because I find it fun to explore new neighborhoods and find my way back to the highway. I'm strange that way.

While some cars do have compasses, I think it's much more practical to have gauges that tell you if your vehicle can make it to the destination than something that tells you whether you're going in the correct general direction, especially since many roads have north, south, east, and west directions posted.

Thats why maps are made. You have to follow the road not the direction of a compass, unless you really like offroading.

Many cars DO have compasses. Mine has one. Came from the factory that way. Right there next to the odometer. See?

because you can't follow it, the road dictates the direction you must go, go buy a compass, put it in your car and try to follow it and see what happens
