I would try Allen, McKinney, Frisco, Plano these are all north of Dallas and semi country. All have great schools and housing well within your price range. Dart which is. "rapid area transit "services most of them already or will very soon. You can get on the train and be downtown in 20 minutes safe and sound. I live in McKinney and have 20 acres with livestock for what you are willing to pay.
McKinney is about as Diverse as you can get. A large black and Hispanic demographic make up as well as white and all levels of income from poor to multi millionaires.

Hi Mike,
I just read an article today in D magazine, mag on Dallas of course, I think it's in the May or June issue, but it rates the top 50 places to live in and around Dallas, and I do recall that #1 rated is Southlake, but I'm not sure I'd put it at #1 with the mean sales price just over half a million i believe.
I have answered a question like this before in the Dallas category, it was a more specific question mentioning Mckinney and Denton, check it out nonetheless.
I'll tell you what I told them, go to my mother's website, ellengomez.com, where you will find some answers to your question, but I encourage you to call her, she's a great local realtor specializing in relocation working with major local companies employees, etc.. She has 28 years experience finding homes for clients in the Dallas metro area.
Good luck!

Just moved to Grapevine, got really lucky...paid the low end of your range for a 3400 sq ft house in the Carroll school district..and we got an inground pool!! Check out the school ratings, best school district in Dallas!! I've seen a few houses, same size in Southlake and around my neighborhood (Grapevine-Carroll ISD) that fit within your budget. Did have to do some updating in my house, but nothing crazy...LOVE the area....and can't beat the schools!!! --- Almost forgot, non exsistent crime and reasonable diversity, I am a white family(also 4 kids) with a black adopted son, and he loves it here....

My family has a house in Cedar Hill, TX it's right around Dallas, but there are a lot of trees, and a gorgeous lake. There is a pretty good Elementary, Middle, and High school in the heart of it. About 2 years after we bought a house, they had large homes for 275K (4 bedrooms)... KB Homes, I think. We're buying another house as an investment, because Cedar Hill is growing quite quickly.
Best of luck!

I live in North Richland Hills...It's a very nice area. The surrounding areas are also nice (Keller, Colleyville, Southlake,Grapevine,Bedford,Flower Mound). A general rule for here is the further north you are, usually the better. I would stay out of Arlington, Irving, Mansfield, and Dallas.

I agree with most everyone else that you should come look around. A lot will depend on what you like, how close to certain things you want to be.
I would suggest that you are careful about the D Magazine references, their measurements rate commute very low in the formula, and depending on how willing you are to spend your time in a car, that could mean a lot more they they let on.
Be sure to drive around a bit during rush hour... Some of the suburb that seem convenient, aren't quite that convenient with traffic.

I would look in Plano or Allen - those are both in north Dallas. They are both great cities - Plano was rated in the top 20 American cities to live. There is also new development in Sachse and Murphy which are (north and east) of I-75. Good luck!

Carollton, Farmers Branch, Lewisville, Addison(more geared towards single up and comers but still nice) Las Colinas. Depends on where you'll be working, the commute can be murder. These suburbs give you and easier commute as they are west of Hwy 75 which is the east border of downtown. And these are nice family type areas. Good luck.

The counties to search for: Dallas, Collin, Denton, Tarrant

for a list by Rating.
You may want to check Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller, Flower Mound. Corinth if you don't mind a bit more of a drive.
