here in Miami, the streets are crammed full of Cuban Americans dancing and celebrating and it's all over every news station on tv. the mayor is begging people to get out of the streets if they see emergency vehicles and stuff like that. is this all over the US news or just local here? it's sorta weird. i'm not cuban so just wondering how big a deal this Castro thing is anywhere else.

don't know what you're talking about...not on the news here in the east bay

It is the top story on Yahoo news though:
"Castro said he was temporarily relinquishing the presidency to his younger brother and successor Raul, the defense minister, but said the move was of "a provisional character." There was no immediate appearance or statement by Raul Castro.

It was the first time in his decades-long tenure that Castro has given up power, though he had been affected in the recent past with occasional health problems. The calm delivery of the announcement appeared to signal that there would be an orderly succession to Raul should Fidel become permanently incapacitated.

The announcement drew cheering crowds in the streets in Miami. People waved Cuban flags on Little Havana's Calle Ocho, shouting "Cuba, Cuba, Cuba," hoping that the end is near for the man most of them consider to be a ruthless dictator. Many of them fled the communist island or have parents and grandparents who did."

I haven't heard about it, but I see now online that he is undergoing surgery. If he dies, it would be a very big deal. Many Cuban Americans that fled from there would celebrate then. It could bring about the end of communism in Cuba. ( Hopefully! )

I read it on the Internet that's all I heard was he was laid up from surgery. Other opponents say they think he is sicker than he acts. His brother would take over if he can not return to power. No big changes there. Although his bro is 75 years old Fidel is 79 so who knows?

It's on the news, but it's not a major news in Washington.
If he died, that could be different story. He outlast many of our presidents; this might be his time to go.
