A GB is over a billion bytes, I think...
http://www.vb-helper.com/howto_format_bytes_big.html
A MB (megabyte) is 1 million bytes, more or less
Therefore there are approximately 4,000 MBs in your laptop. 4 GBs is ALOT of space.
and a KB (kilobyte) is about a thousand bytes, "byte" the way.. hahahaha

As far as buying a laptop goes, since you are extremely illiterate with computers, may I ask that you Email me with more details on what sort of use you are buying it for?
I have 2 GBs and I can download 3-4 movies on my computer. Thats a TON of storage, and I mean, unless youre using yours for something like a small internet server or something, you probably dont need that kind of space, plus its probably too expensive for your needs.
You could try starting smaller, and getting one with les GBs, but I have no clue what youre going to use the computer FOR, so dont freak out just yet, lol.
My buddy, also, is a SERIOUS computer nerd, and he has a toal of about 4 GBs, but he has 2 different computers, and he builds databases and programs, and all this stuff, too. He stores a couple movies on his computer, also, to burn.
Does the computer come with a DVD burner? If you dont Email me, I have to reccommend http://www.bearshare.com which is a great file sharing system, and you can download an enormous amount of stuff from it, if you want to. Even if the Computer doesnt come with a burner, at least you can keep your favorite movie saved.
Also, in bearshare, so a search for "codec" for movies, with the file types- youll understand as soon as you do the search.
Anyways, I hope to hear from you soon, cause I cant imagine a computer illiterate needing that kind of space, lol...
http://www.ebay.com
http://www.craigslist.com
If you want to find something cheaper, just for notes and basic internet stuff, those sites I just listed are good places to look.
I wouldnt suggest spending more than 200 dollars on a computer thats more than a year old. I hae no idea what your usage needs are, so I can give you a better idea of a price range, and what to look for, etc, for that if you Email me.
=)
Good Luck!

First of all, computer doesn't understand Human Languages. It knows only machine language. That is "0" and "1". Simply we call "Binary".
Say "ABCDEFGH". This 8 charecters are "1 Byte", So, Each one is a "BIT".
Let's do the calculation now
8 bit = 1 byte
1024 byte = 1 KB (Kilo Byte)
1024 KB = 1 MB (Mege Byte)
1024 MB = 1 GB (Giga Byte)
1024 GB = 1 TB (Tera Byte)

Gigabyte: a unit of information equal to one billion (1,073,741,824) bytes or 1024 megabytes.
From personal experience, a 4 GB is way, way too little. If it is a laptop, then you need at least a 40 GB hard drive. If it is a desktop that you are looking for, I recommend above 100GB. With 100+, then you will not run out of room at all!!

A GB holds approximately 1024 MB. You should get a laptop with at least 60 GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. Windows XP recommends more than 40GB hard drive and at least 512MB of RAM.
Specs for the laptop should read:
CPU: 1.8 (or higher) GHz
Memory: 512MB (or higher, 1GB is good)
Hard Drive: 60 (or more) GB @ 5600 (or faster) RPM
Might as well make sure it has an INTERNAL wireless card.
Good luck.

Hi minerfan51.
1 GB (gigabyte) is 1024Mb unless stated otherwise.
1 Mb (megabyte) is 1024kb (kilobyte).
if you are looking on to buying a laptop, i suggest strongly on to getting a laptop with extended warranty.
u need to see that laptops are for mobile users who work on the go. if u are going to bring your laptop everywhere, there's a risk of dropping it and ruining it. the risk are much higher compared to a normal desktop.
get a laptop from any manufacturer as long as they provide good warranty and easy to get servicing. laptops are expensive and difficult to fix. make sure u have good warranty.
