It is a good place to live. Generally safe, however neighborhood specific. The city's population has declined over the years due to urban sprawl, but has begun to climb due to the rehabbing of many old and historic buildings into lofts. Like others have said, Olive is a long street. It stretches from the city out to the western suburbs of St. Louis County.
St. Louis and the surrounding area is the home of many great restaraunts. It has a lot of inexpensive recreation also.
Places to visit:
The Zoo -- free
Science Center -- free
History Museum
Botanical Garden
The Arch
Muny Opera ( if in season)
Fox Theater
Powell Symphony Hall
Forest Park
Central West End neighborhood
Delmar Loop neighborhood

Which month? The weather here can be wonderful and then terrible. The people are GREAT. Just ask me, if you don't believe me. And Olive Street is a big street. Will you be downtown? There are a few places downtown that have furnished short-term apartments for about the same price as a hotel. Jefferson Arms is one of them, although the area can be a bit risky if you're wild and unaware. It's right on Tucker Blvd (which used to be 12th) near the 1200 block of Olive. The firm I work for uses Jefferson Arms for it's short-term people, like foreign interns, etc. Not fancy, but ok and safe inside. Further out on Olive gets a bit rough, so you might want to commute from a different area. It totally depends on where you work and what you want. There are some pretty great places to stay that can cost a bit. And there are some that are good but don't cost as much.

Olive street is one of the longest roads in St. Louis so its hard to recommend a hotel. Its a very safe city. But you should still use good sense and be alert. Enjoy your stay.

If you stay on Olive near highway 270 and go west. Very safe. The more east you go the closer to the city you get. I wouldn't go that deep in the city for an extended stay.

While in St. Louis make sure you visit Ted Drewes for custard
Down the street from Ted Drewes on Donovan is a Tom Boy market called Le Grands that sells deli meats and sandwiches and other stuff. Have lunch there one day.

North & East St. Louis are not areas that are safe.
Olive is pretty big. Maybe the Central West End? lost of shops to walk to. Webster Groves area is safe and nice and about 10-min from downtown.
try www.craigslist.com and click on st. louis and apt/housing. you might be able to find someone who needs a roommate for a month...

I live in Lake St. Louis (it's in St. Charles County) and it really depends on where you will be staying as to how safe it is. Olive is a rather long road so I really can't give a more accurate description or ideas on where to stay. If you tell me where you will be working, I could probably be of more assistance.

FOR CHAD: Nelly is one of my neighbors and is seldom in town.
