Cliche

This cliche is used to describe someone who is out of control, and careening about in a drunken manner. It has been derived from an old nautical term used to describe a ship which is out of control and running free. The lack of control in the case of the ship, was due to the ropes, which held the corners of the sail, coming unfastened.
