Cool question... I have many so called "superstitions" that I believe in... Can I have two favorites?
I heard an interesting one from a woman who grew up in the Caribbean. She told me that her Grandmother use to warn her to never kill a spider in the house. Not only is it bad luck, but the spider's family will come to avenge its death.
Ever since my friend told me that, if I find a spider in my house, I catch it in a cup and let it go outside.
When I lived in the Middle East, a friend of mine warned me to cover any food I was going to leave out through the night (like cake, bread, etc). When I asked her why, she told me that if I left it uncovered, the Djinn would play with it.
Another friend told me to never leave a candle burning all night... for the Djinn would play with the flame, and being made of fire and smoke themselves, cause the flame to jump, thus catching the house on fire.
I guess these are not superstitions in my mind because I believe them to be true. But I know many others would consider them to be, so here you are... :)

If a gal puts on a man's hat, she'll end up in bed with him.
Local superstition. May have been started by the friends of a popular musician.

I can´t tell I´m a supertisticious person but there´s one I cant help falling for..everytime salt gets spilled by me on the table I must pick a bit of it and throw it over my left shoulder , I guess my mom has to do with that she was quite supersticious and everytime I spilled the salt she would rush and tell me to do so , according to her to spill salt on a table is bad cuz it is like spilling salt on your life and money! ....just like that there´s another one here every xmas one must set a dish nxt to the door with pourage , that is for the tomte -dwarf- to eat if you don´+t do it you may have bad luck for the rest of the year . Tradition here says that the tomtes take care of your belongings , crops if you have a farm etc so it comes every xmas night to eat as a reward and if he doesn´t find any food -which simbolizes your gratitude- he will be mad and not guard your stuff.. tometes here are said to be kind and a bit playful like lil children they can be nice but still brats!anyway I don´t get any dish out there for him...=) (this is a swedish tradition)

Appygolaki,
Growing up it was considered
simply 'in bad taste' to give someone
a 'watch' (time-piece) as a gift.
It meant 'distancing' of some sort,
including death, could come about.
The 'logic' behind it was that a
watch was given to somebody
'retiring' from many years of
service, or to someone who
had come of age, and on to college. etc.
So there is the superstition and
logic, and wouldn't you know it,
I became a watch fanatic, and
collected them -- simply loved them,
Now, most of the time I wear a special one:
the one my parents gave me when
I went away to college, especially now
that both my parents have passed away.
Strange, uhhh?
Stay well.

Never sweep the floor on the first day of the Chinese New year as you will be sweeping all your luck away. Most Chinese are superstitious and till this day sweeping is not done on the said day.

Well when I got married, all my in-laws (they're British - I'm American) gave me horseshoes and a chimney sweep doll. All are supposed to be symbols of good luck for a long and happy marriage.
