ok....this is how it goes. i was hired in january of this year at a grocery store, in the delicatessen (i slice sandwich meat & cheese). i was hired at $6 an hour, which was fine at the time, while i was still in highschool. but now, almost 8 months later, i'm still making the same $6. but what pisses me off is that just last month, we hired 4 new people, and each one of them was hired at $7. now, i can ask for a raise, but it would be even more of a slap in the face if they take me up to $7, the same as people who haven't even been there 2 months. what do you think about my situation?? would it be asking too much to ask for more than $7 ? oh yeah, and did i mention that i have been in that department longer than all 8 other people that work with me, including the manager? any help w/ this situation would be appreciated.

sorry to keep making this longer, but i also have to mention that i can't really tell the store director that i know the other employees wages. we actually have a policy that you aren't supposed to discuss how much you make with other employees, but of course everyone does.

again, sorry to make it longer, but i forgot to mention that i have graduated from highschool, in june. and i didn't really discuss the wages with them, but overheard them when they were trying to figure out how much they were going to make that week.

I would definatley ask for a raise if i were you, if i were you just go in and talk to your supervisor/boss (whoever you report to) and tell them how long you have been doing the job, that you are always on time for work (counting on that you are) and you are a hard worker and so on and so forth. what i wouldnt do is mention that other peeps are making more than you and you have been there the longest - only mention your strong point. the raise is dependent on you and you only, not what other people are doing. make sure to be very confident but not cocky (sometimes the two can be confused) and make sure you have a big smile the whole time!
good luck

First off you agreed when you took the job to work for 6 dollars an hour! According to your question you are a Highschool student. Usually Highschool students do not last very long at these types of jobs therefore the boss has no motive in giving them any more money! BUT you should find out the company policy regarding employee reviews! Usually when an employer reviews the work of the employee a raise is given!

If you are content to recieve a dollar less than everyone else, I'm sure that the company won't go out of thier way to pay you more. Tell your boss that you would like to have your wages reviewed. Tell him what you can do for him, even if its all bs...tell him you've helped train everyone in the department and you really like it there and want to stay, but it is very difficult for you to work for your current wages. Don't say anything negative about anyone and don't be bitter.

The discussion of salary among employees are grounds for termination. Just ask the boss when will you be eligible for a raise and will it be more than the new minimum wage that has Been announced? The wage I believe is 7.40 per hour.

It's good you learned this now... an employer will pay you what you are willing to work for. He has you now at 6$ and because of that he's not going to just offer you more money. If you don't have a regular raise process where your salary is reviewed regularly, you will have to ask for one.

Also, sometimes the easiest way to get a raise is to go work for someone else.

You should point this out to your boss and ask for at least $2.00 more than they are getting.don't go in whining though,be confident and know that the experience you now have will be appreciated somewhere else if not by your present employer.
By the way, this is the first time I've ever heard of such a low wage for that position.

You should feel perfectly comfortable asking for at leat the $7 provided you do good work. Clearly they think the work is worth the $7 or more.
