my cd rom drive dissapeared from my computer and from device manager. It simply does not show up, or function. I am running windows XP, and have had this problem before and somehow fixed it, only its not working now. plz help

The ATA cable is loose, or the power cable. Or the chip have burned.

Check the "molex" power plug to the drive and make sure that it is inserted completely into the drive's receptacle. Since you said that the drive did not function. If the power plug is not plugged in properly, the drive will not show up in "My Computer".

Maybe you can try to login into the BIOS to check the motherboard's settings.
if no problem with the settings, then check the IDE cable, ports or eventhe CDROM drive, check is it still function on other CPU!
