Basically because he never lost a battle.

And He defeated the ancient bane of Greece, the Persian Empire. Persia was the superpower of its day, and had been a threat to the independence of the Greek city states for generations.

And he did this before he was thirty.

Alexander the Great conquered the ancient middle east by the age of 33. This feat, if one looks at a map of his conquest, was done without any "modern weapons" of war. The speed of his conquest is amazing, even by our standards. He had no air force, no tanks, no artillery, and no paved roads to move troops and supplies. Even Hitler's blitzkrieg of World War 2 failed to conquer as much territory as Alexander. Had Alexander not been an alcoholic he may have built a culture that would have rivaled Rome.

Because his military prowess is almost unmatched by today's standards. He conquered most of the ancient world by his early 30s (where most of us would be stuck in a cubicle 9 to 5).

How many military leaders can say that they've conquered 70 cities and several countries by the age of 33?

But he also had a dark side; he was very egotistical (no surprise) and he had one of his advisers (and his best friend) murdered because he disagreed with Alexander on certain issues.

Alexander the great was one of the greatest military minds of his time or any other for that matter . He was able conker more of the world than any other military leader or country before him or since , and he did it against overwhelming odds in some cases by using sheer strategy and military maneuvers . He did have his faults and was an alcoholic . His empire however did not collapse after his death , it was divided among four of his generals and closest friends .

The title was probably self-proclaimed.

But ask it again after you have conquered most of the world.

The don't, really.

He was an alchoholic, and he died and his empire collapsed because of it.

He was a big loser IMHO.
