My son's father applied for Disability through social security in 2002, he was recently approved after a long bout with SSA and he may be approved. During this time I had to care for my child on my own and I know that his dad will receive back pay, but will my son also??

If he gets Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI), there will be no benefits paid for the children. This is a form of welfare for those who become fully disabled but have not worked long enough to qualify for regular Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

If he has worked long enough to qualify for SSDI, there are benefits payable for the children, and those benefits will be paid to the person appointed personal representative of the child. You need to go to your local Social Security office to file so that YOU, as the custodial parent, get those checks sent to you. Hopefully the father included the name of your son on his initial paperwork, as that will make the process of getting the funds easier.

SSDI will pay back payments for the child.

If he other children under the age of 18, the family benefits will be spread among all those children.

Supposely he should, but it's up to the social security board. How ever the decison usually rests with individuals who handle each case and this is the reason cases take so long and many who are in need fail to get it and many who are not can easily get disability.
Usually when you apply for social security you began to receive letters form lawyers or others who claim to be able to get your funds faster and larger for a piece of the action. This is known as bird dogging. Federal employees sell information on filers to attorneys and ex- employees who prey on those in need and make money. This is the main reason it take s so long to get results. One case history I can speak o fis the son 0in- law of the governor of one of the western states was cut nearly in half(lost 1 leg, shoulder/arm and part of his body and was declared not disable by social security doctors , while I also know fo one guy who's only claim to disability was he was the lawn caretaker for a doctor who gave social security exams. Stay on them and write /call your congress person as this helps in an election year.:) Good luck
