theyre to guide you around the neck

theyre always on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, and so on.

but when you get tot he professional level where you can play a kirk hammet solo upside down in the dark, you dont need em.

The dots help you see where on the guitar's neck you are, because otherwise frets look very similar. They're a helpful tool to the beginner player because you'll learn to recognize positions by them.

Most guitars also have small dots on the side of the neck, to be visible when you're standing up. If the guitar you're looking at has those, it should be fine.

they're generally not important, assuming that they are marked on the side, (i cant imagine they wouldn't be) one of my acoustics has no inlay on front either. good luck in your pursuit of guitar, be prepared for some painful fingers in the beginning!
