Some ships move product in large metal boxes which are typically called a "container". They are about the size of the enclosed van trailer being pulled behind semi-trailer trucks that you see so many of on the hiways now days.

Some containers are built to be moved off the ship and set right onto a flatbed trailer and pulled behind a semi tractor. Others are built to accept an assembly of wheels placed under one end and then pulled down the hiway from the other end.

In general containers are about 8'x8'x40' and hold a lot of 'stuff', with double doors on one end and heavy duty enough that a forklift (or other similar lifting device) can drive inside for loading and unloading.

The international standard is 17,500 kg for a 20' container, 24,000 kg for a 40' container. Carriers may require lower payloads.

well, it depends on what your talking about, I suppose.

A container is usually like a certain qty of merchandise and the load has to be full to ship a container most of the time.
