Regard medication as a last resort but don't rule it out.

As you lie there, take each thought that comes to mind and mentally put it in one of three boxes:

1) Things which are out of your control and which you therefore don't need to worry about.

2) Things which you can do something about but which depend on people or circumstances, so cannot be done now and therefore you need not deal with at the moment.

3) Things which you can (and will) do tomorrow.

Then get up and write a list (3 columns). Writing them down will effectively move them from your 'worry' area to the paper (you know you won't forget them in the morning.)

Once you have done that, concentrate on one good thing that happened that day and give thanks for it.

This technique takes a little practice, so don't be dismayed if it doesn't work all at once. You should feel yourself getting better at it day by day, though. It is a very useful skill to develop.

I just saw my shrink today bc I've been having sleeping trouble. She said that if you lay down and aren't asleep within 20-30 minutes, you should get up and read/watch something boring. Or you could turn the TV on and leave it on a static channel--that technique is called using white noise. White noise can be tapes of the ocean or a babbling brook or something like that, too. you have to use your bed just for sleeping, and your subconscous will pick up on the fact that whenever you lay down in bed, you're suppose to go to sleep. Sleep is a habit, so you want to develop a habit of going to your bed only when you are going to sleep. Your body will get trained, too.

You may be able to go to your primary care physician's office and see if he/she can prescribe you a short term medicine to help you sleep at night. There are some really good ones that have come out recently. Your physician may be able to prescribe you something to stop this cycle of not sleeping in order to get things back to normal since you are obviously having a lot of stress right now.

yawn really deep, and count them... I've heard that you can never get to 10...
on some nights when I'm having trouble, i try This, and usually i fall asleep by the 8th yawn....
(but they have to be BIG yawns!)

or try putting your pillow at the other end of the bed...

or try one of those noise maker thingys, that way your mind can have other things to focus on and that may help you get to sleep...

other wise, go the pharmaceutical route... try one of the OTC sleep aids...

at different times, each one of these methods have worked for me :)

Try Dr Vogel's (Bioforce) Avena Sativa herbal drops straight onto your tongue. It works for me. You can generally get it from independent chemists.
